Apple Pie with Crumb Topping
I make this Apple Pie with Crumb topping for Thanksgiving every year. I’m particularly fond of the crumb topping.
Pie Filling
1 frozen 8 inch pie crust
½ cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon almond extract
7 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 7 medium)
Crumb Topping
¾ cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup packed brown sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup butter (at room temperature)
——————————————————
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Allow frozen pie crust to defrost according to package directions. Using a fork, poke small holes into the bottom of the crust so that it does not bubble when baking. Bake crust at 375 degrees for approximately 4 to 5 minutes or until it is dry.
2. In a large bowl, mix all filling ingredients. Stir in apples and allow the mixture to sit for at least 10 minutes. Pour apple mixture into partially baked crust.
3. In medium bowl, mix all topping ingredients until crumbly; sprinkle over filling.
4. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are tender and juice is bubbly. Cool completely or serve warm with a scoop of ice cream.
Tip:
Line the edge of the crust with aluminum foil until the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent burning.
